Premium Efficiency Cooling Program

Ensuring Quality Installation

Choosing a qualified HVAC contractor is just as important as choosing energy efficient equipment. You need quality installation and maintenance to make sure your equipment operates efficiently, reliably and safely. Here are some important factors to consider when selecting a qualified contractor:

  • Work with one of the the AC Time Program's participating contractors. They're familiar with the importance of energy efficiency, reliability, comfort and savings.
  • Hire only California C20 licensed contractors, and contact the Contractors State License Board, CSLB, at 1-800-321-CSLB or at www.cslb.ca.gov to confirm your contractor's license status.
  • Insist on receiving a detailed, written estimate for the work you need.
  • A qualified technician will survey your home and do a cooling-load calculation to size the equipment. This calculation, known in the industry as a 'Manual J,' helps the contractor size the equipment to meet your home's specific cooling needs.
  • Quality contractors will encourage you to consider premium-efficiency equipment. For best efficiency, ask for equipment rated at SEER 14 or higher.

The Premium Efficiency Cooling Program recommends using qualified licensed HVAC contractors when replacing your air conditioning units. The program does not endorse nor warrant the workmanship of any particular contractor or contractors. We advise that you get three bids and consider more than just initial cost. Service, skilled technicians, quality of workmanship, insurance coverage, and references should all be considered before entering into a contract with any contractor.

Resources for selecting a qualified contractor are available at the Contractors State License Board, the Better Business Bureau, Electric & and Gas Industries Association, North American Technician Excellence (NATE).
